Viena (Dakota Fanning) plays a roadie who may regret her decision to travel with a band in Viena and the Fantomes. The film, which was actually filmed around 2014 and has been on the shelf until now, tells of a young roadie who goes on tour with the post-punk band the Fantomes in the ’80s. It starts off like fun, but she soon finds herself caught up in alcohol, drugs, and a love triangle.
It’s a familiar type of cautionary tale, and while the trailer doesn’t quite grab me, there’s a decent cast – Caleb Landry Jones, Evan Rachel Wood and Jon Bernthal among them – and the potential for some solid rocker drama. Hopefully the reasons for the big release delay don’t have something to do with the film’s quality.
The film is both written and directed by Mexican filmmaker Gerardo Naranjo, whose credits include 2011 action-drama Miss Bala (which was then remade with Gina Rodriguez in 2019), Narcos and Fear the Walking Dead.
Viena and the Fantomes, also starring Zoë Kravitz (Band Manager), Jeremy Allen White (Freddy), Frank Dillane (Keyes), Olivia Luccardi (Rebecca), Sarah Steele, Philip Ettinger, and Ryan LeBeouf (Paul), is getting a U.S. Digital and On Demand release on June 30.
