The film follows the story of the American Samoa soccer team, which gained notoriety for their infamous 31-0 defeat in a FIFA match in 2001. As the World Cup Qualifiers draw near, the team decides to bring in Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender), a down-on-his-luck and unconventional coach. The team hopes that Rongen’s coaching will lead to a turnaround for what is often considered the world’s worst soccer team. This heartfelt underdog comedy chronicles their journey and transformation.
