3 Idiots (2009)

3 Idiots is a Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age comedy-drama film co-written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The film follows the friendship of three students at an Indian engineering college and is a satire about the social pressures under an Indian education system. The film is narrated through parallel dramas, one in the present and the other ten years in the past.
Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra under the banner Vinod Chopra Films, and based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone: What not to do at IIT! for which author was not suitably credited, the film incorporated real Indian inventions created by Remya Jose, Mohammad Idris, Jahangir Painter and Sonam Wangchuk.
Past
In 1999, Farhan Qureshi arrives at the prestigious Imperial College of Engineering (ICE) in Delhi, where he is immediately introduced to its cutthroat academic culture and the hazing practices among its seniors. He and his roommate, the devoutly religious Raju Rastogi, meet newcomer Ranchhoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad, nicknamed “Rancho”, in the middle of a hazing ritual. Rancho quickly proves his prowess as an engineer by devising a trap to injure the head senior; Farhan and Raju soon realize that Rancho is to be their other roommate…
Present
Ten years later, Farhan has sustained his photography career, while Raju is married and has found success as a business executive. Farhan and Raju receive a call from Chatur saying he knows where Rancho is; the three of them reunite on the ICE terrace, where Chatur brags about having become a wealthy executive at an American corporation, per his vow to Rancho that he would ultimately become more successful. Chatur informs them that Rancho now resides in Shimla, and the three of them set off on a road trip to find their long-lost friend…
